One of the most common questions we get is whether ceramic watches are actually safe to wear, or if there’s a real risk of them shattering.

Most people are familiar with the benefits of ceramic. It’s highly scratch-resistant, lightweight on the wrist, and offers a look that metal simply can’t replicate. That said, these advantages often raise questions for our clients. Namely, how significant the drawbacks really are. More specifically: how shatter-prone are ceramic watches, and are they suitable for daily wear?

Unlike steel, ceramic can chip and shatter, there’s no question about that. Steel will dent to absorb an impact, ceramic won’t. Though, in real-world daily wear, the risk is minimal.
We’ve sold many ceramic watches over the years and have yet to see a single instance of one of our clients shattering their watch through normal use. Although, we have seen one bracelet crack from a drop.

While there are some online examples of ceramic watches cracking, nearly all of them involve dropping the watch, usually onto a hard surface like tile or concrete. If the issue was truly widespread, we’d expect to see many more examples of shatters.

Even for non-ceramic watches, dropping a watch on a hard surface is a serious impact that will almost certainly cause damage.

These watches are designed to be worn. Ceramic is fully suitable for daily wear when treated with the same care as any fine mechanical watch.
If you find yourself worrying about it, the best solution is simple: make sure your ceramic watch is properly insured and includes accidental damage coverage. That way, you can enjoy all the benefits of ceramic with complete peace of mind.
